Dr. Courtney A. Hammonds, a renowned fashion expert, educator, and philanthropist, recently hosted the second annual “Fashion in the Garden” event in collaboration with Dr. Dionne L. Boyd. Held at the Darwin Hotel in Atlanta, the event was a mesmerizing blend of fashion, creativity, and inclusivity, showcasing the latest trends from a diverse group of designers. For Dr. Hammonds, this event is not just about stunning garments but about bringing people from all walks of life together to celebrate the transformative power of fashion.
A Celebration of Fashion and Philanthropy
“Fashion in the Garden” turned the courtyard of the Darwin Hotel into a vibrant runway, where the beauty of nature is fused with the energy of fashion. The setting provided a unique backdrop for models to strut in designs that ranged from everyday wear to timeless runway looks, reflecting a broad spectrum of fashion styles and inspirations.
Designers such as Myriam Belasse of KeenaBela, Rodrick Gilchrist of Gilchrist Designs, Cedric Brown of Cedric Brown Collection, Darryl Hunter of Dragon Perfumes, Vernell Washington of Grand Diva Designs, Joni Dubriel of Junk by Joni, and Louisa Owusu of Luwiza Moda presented their collections. Each designer brought their own flair, pushing the boundaries of creativity while remaining deeply rooted in inclusivity and purpose.
Attendees were treated to the sounds of live music and on the runway, models were serenaded with music by new pop artist Maria Raquel. Attendees had the chance to interact with local vendors and designers, creating a marketplace of ideas and inspiration. The atmosphere was one of celebration, community, and fashion with a cause, promoting local talent and small businesses.
Inclusivity at the Core
For Dr. Hammonds and his co-host, Dr. Boyd, inclusivity remains the central theme of “Fashion in the Garden.” Many fashion events can feel exclusive, limiting attendance to industry insiders or high-profile figures. However, Hammonds and Boyd sought to shatter that perception with their event. As Dr. Hammonds stated, “We want anyone that can come, from the janitor to the CEO, because everybody’s important, and everybody wears a uniform.”
This openness is what sets “Fashion in the Garden” apart. It is not just an event for the fashion elite but for everyone who wants to appreciate the artistry, creativity, and impact of fashion. Hammonds and Boyd created a teachable space where people from various backgrounds could connect over a shared love of design, style, and community.
Dr. Hammonds: A Leader in Fashion Education
Dr. Hammonds has long been a fixture in Atlanta’s fashion and education scene. With a background that spans over two decades, he is known not only for his eye for fashion but for his dedication to fostering new talent. As the former dean of fashion at The Art Institute of Atlanta, Dr. Hammonds has played a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of fashion professionals. His work has earned him recognition on both a national and international scale, cementing his place as a thought leader in fashion, education, and philanthropy.
Beyond his role as an educator, Dr. Hammonds has a deep commitment to philanthropy. His involvement in various charitable initiatives, such as the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Awareness events, highlights his belief that fashion should be a vehicle for good. “Fashion in the Garden” is a perfect representation of his philosophy, blending style with purpose to create an inclusive platform for designers, models, and attendees alike.
Fall 2024 Fashion Trends to Watch
As summer draws to a close, Dr. Hammonds has his eyes on the trends that will define fashion in the upcoming fall season. Here are four key trends he predicts will dominate the fashion landscape this year:
1. Earthy Tones and Layering
Fall 2024 will see a return to nature-inspired hues such as olive greens, terracotta, and rich browns. These colors, often associated with grounding and warmth, will dominate everything from coats to knits. Layering will also play a major role, with oversized jackets and scarves creating chic, cozy looks.
2. Maximalist Accessories
Forget minimalism—this fall is all about bold, statement accessories. From chunky chains to oversized earrings, the accessories will make the outfit. Designers are pushing the envelope, experimenting with exaggerated proportions and playful materials, adding a touch of whimsy and sophistication to every ensemble.
3. Sustainability in Style
With an increasing focus on sustainability, fashion will continue its shift toward eco-friendly fabrics and ethical production methods. Expect to see a rise in organic cotton, recycled textiles, and locally sourced materials in this season’s collections. Sustainable fashion will not only be a trend but a responsibility for both designers and consumers alike.
4. Tailored Streetwear
Streetwear is evolving, merging with traditional tailoring to create sleek, sophisticated looks that are comfortable and functional. This fall, tailored joggers, structured hoodies, and hybrid suits will bridge the gap between casual and formal, offering a fresh take on both menswear and womenswear.
The success of the second annual “Fashion in the Garden” event is a testament to Dr. Hammonds’ vision and passion for inclusivity in fashion. His ability to blend artistry with education and philanthropy with style is a rare gift that continues to enrich Atlanta’s fashion scene. As “The Docs” look forward to even greater things, one thing is certain: the future of fashion in Atlanta is in good hands.
